『オーバーラップOverlaps』は、スタジオ・トルスタとインドの出版社タラブックスによる展覧会です。
デザイナーのカトリオーナ・マカイヴァーと映像作家のアルン・ウルフが運営するスタジオ・トルスタ/Studio Tolstaは、職人の手作業によって工芸品のような絵本を生み出しているタラブックス/Tarabooksのエディトリアル･プロダクトデザイナーでもあります。
本展では、伝統的な手仕事が各地に残るインドと、手織りツイードが生まれた地でありマカイヴァー氏の故郷であるスコットランドのアウター・ヘブリディーズ、ふたつのクラフト文化が融合させて作り出したプロダクトデザインを、製作工程の映像を交えてご紹介します。
想像力と工芸の関係性、抽象性と触知性の相互影響、多様な文化とその文脈の交わり、さらには現代のデザインと伝統工芸の融合、こうしたものの“オーバーラップ”を探る試みです。
熟練の職人が素材を美しく機能的なモノへと昇華させるとき、さまざまな背景が工芸品に織り込まれます。この展覧会がその物語への誘いとなれば幸いです。

オープニングイベントでは駒形克己がナビゲーターとなり、ブロックプリントやシルクスクリーン印刷による本を出版するタラブックスの試みと、スタジオ・トルスタの融合的なデザインをテーマにトークショーをおこないます。南インドのTarabooks ギータ・ウルフと、日本のGALLERY KOMAGATA 駒形克己は、それぞれが小さな出版社として独自に活動を続けています。毎年おこなわれるイタリア・ボローニャブックフェアでの共同出展者として、長年交流を続けてきています。

Overlaps: Craft Processes from India and Beyond
Overlaps is an exhibition presented by Studio Tolsta in association with Tara Books. It showcases eight distinct craft processes, and is a tribute to the work of remarkable artisans who are masters at making things by hand. Studio Tolsta was started by Catriona Maciver, a Scottish designer who lives in India. She also works for Tara Books, and is enriched by the publisher’s focus on indigenous art and artisanship. By blending together text, photos, short films and physical objects, the exhibition captures the energy and dynamism of artisanal ingenuity. Many of these craft practices have a long and enduring tradition, and have been explored by Studio Tolsta and Tara Books through their work. Some of these traditions continue to thrive today but others are sadly in decline. Overlaps is an exploration of the intimate relationship between imagination and craft, the interplay between abstraction and tactility, the intersection of diverse cultures and contexts, and the coming together of contemporary design with age-old craftsmanship. It invites you to explore the intricate narrative woven by these crafts, where skilled hands work materials into elegant and functional objects.

Studio Tolsta’s collections of homewares, bags, and accessories are inspired by the rich craft traditions of India, as well as by the handwoven tweed from the founder’s ancestral home in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Studio Tolsta products combine modern functional design with traditional techniques and processes. Carefully sourced materials are brought together with integrity, in products that are designed to stand the test of time. Many of these products are made at in-house tailoring and block-printing workshops run on ethical fair trade practices, but also by working closely with weavers, natural dyers, embroiderers and rug makers from various parts of India. The rich collaboration and dialogue with master craftspeople, and the overlapping of different ways of seeing and doing, shape the identity of products that are indelibly human.

The exhibition is built on narratives around crafts people, whose knowledge about the process often emerges in the doing. These skills are usually passed on through family or community lines, through a rich and subtle vocabulary that defines tools, material, and techniques with precision. Each craftsperson adapts their knowledge to new needs and markets, but the basic processes have endured. Artisans today might handle modern tools along with older ones, but they are not ‘manufacturers’ in the modern industrial sense. Even if they produce objects in large numbers, each of them manages to retain a sense of the hand of the maker – in some cases nothing more than a hint of imperfection, in others a truly original individuality. Many talented crafts people are not formally literate, but the mastery of their disciplines is remarkable. The deep commitment to their vocations, and an openness to exploration and learning, is both humbling and inspiring.


タラブックスはインド、タミル・ナードゥ州チェンナイを拠点とするライター、デザイナー、製本職人の共同体で、ほとんどのタイトルを社内で制作しています。奥深いインドの民族やフォークアートをテーマに、彼らの伝統的なアートを現代的なデザインと美しい製本で世に送り出すことでご存知の方も多いかもしれません。本の形そのものへの実験的な試みも多く、内容やデザイン、紙や印刷方法にもこだわっています。印刷から製本まですべての工程をハンドメイドで行う本でも有名です。タラブックスの職人への関心は、インドの職人をテーマにした本にも表れています。手ずからモノを生み出すことはインドでは長い間伝統とされてきました。昔ながらのやり方が現在も脈々と息づき、さらには新たな時代やニーズに合わせてしなやかに進化してきました。美しさと機能性の両方を兼ね備えたモノづくりは職人の手があってこそ。その職人の個性、作り方の作法、考え抜かれた工程、さらにはそれを導くためのボキャブラリーに光を当てることには、一見の価値があります。紙の本が衰退していく時代にあって、タラブックスはあえてその職人技とモノとしての触れられる本の価値を広めたいと考えています。

Tara Books is a collective of writers, designers and book makers, based in Chennai. Most of their
titles are generated in-house. Tara’s engagement with the rich diversity of Indian folk and tribal art is
well known, bringing many of these traditions into the book by combining them with contemporary
design and fine production. They enjoy experimenting with the form of the book: from content and
design, to paper and printing. Tara is well known for their books made completely by hand, which
are printed and bound in their special book making workshop. Their interest in artisanship also
extends to bringing out books on Indian artisans. Making by hand has a long and enduring tradition
in India: older methods of doing have survived and adapted to new contexts and needs. It is the
hand of the artisan which continues to give form to both function and beauty. The persona of the
maker, the doing of craft, the dynamism of process, and the vocabulary that guides it are all worth
discovering. With their interest in artisanship and tactility, Tara celebrates the physical book at a
time when its obituary is being written.
